I spent the weekend at the Alma Holiday Fair in Rye, a fundraiser for St Vincent's hospital, where I watched hundreds of people, mostly women, shopping for Christmas gifts. During a quiet moment I was struck by how much fun these women were having trying to find the perfect gift for their loved ones. Likewise, I could tell the other vendors and I were having just as much fun helping the shoppers select the best gift. Helping someone find that perfect gift is one of life's simple pleasures for me. Now I shop on-line as much as anyone. BUT when you really need to find the right gift – there is simply no substitute for working with a live person who knows and loves the products they are selling. In these last frenzied days of shopping I encourage everyone to get out from behind the screen, meet the people you are buying from, eavesdrop on other shoppers conversations, enjoy some laughter and try to take a moment to think about how excited your loved one will be to unwrap your present this year. I promise it will be more fulfilling.

Secret of My Success: Anne Ainslie

Inspired by her love for the outdoors and fashion, Anne Ainsle opened the Black Squirrel Outfitters shop in Pelham more than three years ago.

Anne Ainslie opened Black Squirrel Outfitters at its first location on 15 Fifth Ave. in Pelham on September of 2007 and has lived in the community with her family since May 2005. In May 2010, the store opened up at larger retail space located on 525 Fifth Ave., Pelham, NY.

As a small business owner, Ainslie has used her position to give back to the communities that have supported her. For example, she recently hosted a shopping day for Friends of Pelham Sports, an organization aimed at investing at the recreational facilities for the Town of Pelham. In a little more than four hours, the store was able to donate nearly $2,000 to the organization.

What drew you to your profession?What do you find interesting about the work you do for a living?
I think Black Squirrel Outfitters started with my families love for the outdoors. I have a husband and 2 boys and we love to be active and we are always outside, whether we are playing or just watching. My family needed good looking, functional clothes that worked for our active lifestyles, and I felt there was a real void in the marketplace. There are plenty of high end fashion houses and mass market men's shops, like J Crew, Orvis, LL Bean, but I believe I fill the niche in the middle -- I marry fashion with the outdoors to create the Black Squirrel look which we call outdoor chic. I love finding the merchandise, meeting new people, helping customers find the appropriate outfit or gift.

How do you balance your career with family life?
I chose to open my shop at 15 Fifth Ave., Pelham, NY so that I could still be a part of my boys' daily lives. My first location was very close to our home and schools. Now that they are a bit older, the bike ride to 525 Fifth Ave is easy. I work hard when the boys are in school and doing their homework so that I can be there for them when they have free time and games.

If you could change one career decision you’ve made, what would it be?
Take more chances.

What are some key lessons you've learned in your professional and personal life that you think everyone can learn from?
I think one needs to be passionate about what they do. I think treating all those around you with respect is of utmost importance. Lastly, surrounding yourself with people smarter than yourself, all of whom have different strengths and weakness is the key to success.

What is your definition of success?
Having a strategy and fulfilling it. Enjoying your daily routine.

$1600 Raised in Four Short Hours at Friends of Pelham Sports Fundraiser

What a fantastic day at Black Squirrel's Friends of Pelham Sports event yesterday. In four short hours, Black Squirrel raised $1600 for FPS! I love this organization. FPS' goals are to be a long-term presence in the community and to fund needed recreational improvements throughout the Pelhams, with a turf field being the first step. At Black Squirrel, I am all about promoting healthy and active lifestyles, just like FPS. As a business owner, I am all for organizations that want to enhance the amenities in our town and make Pelham a desirable destination for families. As a parent, I am all too familiar with the disappointment of games being cancelled due to damp fields and of fields being closed all summer. I am proud to be associated with this organization and I want to thank everyone who came out yesterday to support the cause.

If you couldn't make it, you missed a great cross section of our wonderful town and surrounding communities. We had loads of kids in soccer uniforms. We had youth coaches. We had high school coaches and teachers (thanks James Rogers). We had high school students who volunteered to take pictures, greet customers and bag merchandise (thanks Cassie Fox, Lily DiPaola and Will Kavanagh). We had families from Larchmont and Bronxville supporting the cause. We had FPS board member Ellen Tuttle's indefatigable energy serving customers and making the shop fun. We had the Krups "beertender" which was quickly deemed a great gift for dad's (unfortunately I don't sell these). We had constant girls volleyball updates (congrats on a great season). And last but not least, we had my beloved Dallas Cowboys overtime victory over the hated Redskins (sorry Giants' fans).

One of the really fun parts of my job is when I get to take Black Squirrel on the road. Tomorrow I head south for our first "trunk show" of the season. On Wednesday, November 2nd, Black Squirrel will be showing the best of its best at Sallie Glover's beautiful house in Raleigh, NC. It always so much fun for me to re-connect with old friends and customers, and to make new ones – it is truly inspirational and what makes my job rewarding. I like to Facebook and text as much as anyone, but nothing beats seeing people face to face, catching up with their lives and seeing what BSQO items they like.

Think Snow

I know I am going to sound like the biggest hypocrite in the world since, as many of you know, I hate the cold as much as anyone, but I am really psyched for the foul weather headed our way tomorrow. Here’s why. I just got in a shipment from a new vendor for us – Mammut – and I love, love, love it! I can’t wait to take it for a test drive. Mammut is Swiss company that is primarily known for their great climbing gear, so I know the quality will be there. But the real reason I am excited and the reason the brand always catches my eye when I go to the Outdoor Retailer show is because it is so good looking. I always think of the brand for its fun colors, simple lines and great fabrics. I know I will be ready for whatever Mother Nature dishes out tomorrow – will you?

I know I will live in the Snow Zip. It feels great and the colors are vibrant and fun. Yes, the snow zip was made for outdoor wear, but I also like it with my jeans and cowboy boots. The purple and guava are the perfect shades and the snow white can't be beat as it is a pure white which is so hard to find for winter wear.

The Polar Pull in bark and black are so rich in feel and customers are already commenting on what a "nice alternative" it is to a sweater.

The Plano soft shell jacket is uber col with the red mammoth on the sleeve. Works for the young and old.

Pelham's Ingall's field was filled with over 100 boys learning lacrosse tips from two of the best -- Ned Crotty and Max Quinzani -- two former attackmen that led Duke to a 2010 National Championship. Ned is currently working for Trilogy Lacrosse, an organization that prides itself on being the leader in lacrosse education. With its unique teaching philosophy Trilogy Lacrosse has created a first-class reputation for personal commitment to every student-athlete. Those of us who watched Ned and Max conduct yesterday's clinic, and many who have attended Trilogy's camps, would agree with the Trilogy statement that, "First and foremost, we are educators."

Columbus Day Weekend

If you are lucky enough to be going way for the upcoming Columbus Day weekend, I offer a few packing tips.

Start with the appropriate size duffle. We love the color and size options of our Patagonia duffle. Remember, it is just a weekend, so the small or medium should suffice, unless you are packing for the whole family and then the large is a perfect option. Garth much prefers one big bag to several small ones. Simply a matter of preference.

As for contents, naturally it depends on where you are headed, but the temperatures do seem to be dropping. We think in terms of base layer, mid layer, outerwear, shirts, pants and accessories. So my picks would be:
base layer -- Ibex Zepher
mid layer - Rab Fleece
outer layer - Patagonia Ultralight Down Jacket
shirt - Saltaire or TailorByrd
pants - Mountain Khakis - any style: original, cords or flannel lined
accessories - Ibex gloves and Patagonia beanie

Fall for Suede

Suede is the new, hot texture this fall and we absolutely love our NEW suede belts from Torino. The navy with red stitching is great looking and my personal favorite. The $75 price point is not bad for a good looking and well constructed belt.

A few customers of recent have been uneasy with the navy and asked about what shoe to wear. Just as brown, black, and gray are neutrals, navy can be too. Wear the navy belt with brown suede loafers for a stylish, sophisticated look, if you have them, but otherwise don't sweat it.

2011 Mud Run

This year's mud run proved to be just as much fun as last year's, and even muddier! While I missed having Quinn along, Davis Allen, Sammy Mueller and Hayne were great company. Well, actually, they were inspiration as I only saw them at the starting line and then again when I finished. They were amazing as they produced great times and attitudes.

Nearly 2400 people ran in the 2011 Merrell Down and Dirty 5K Mud Run, and I am pleased to report that all of us finished in the top 100 overall: Hayne 35th, Sammy 79th, Davis 82nd, and Anne 95th -- not too shabby for 13 year olds and an old lady.

Think about participating next year. You will not regret it.

Down and Dirty Mud Run

As Sunday approaches I grow excited and anxious about participating again in the second annual Merrell Down and Dirty Mud Run. My boys and I had so much fun last year that we convinced Garth and a few friends to join us this year for the mud run. It takes place at Orchard Beach in the Bronx which is part of Pelham Bay Park, the largest park in NYC. The 5K race is filled with obstacles and tons of mud. Last year I found the race challenging and hysterical at the same time. I look forward to running, jumping, crawling, and hurdling the 5K race this year with Garth & Hayne Ainslie, Davis Allen & Sammy Mueller (the other girl willing to get dirty). Nut of the Month

Our new silk/cotton short just introduced by TailorByrd is my "Nut of the Month." I love the feel, detailed stitching, length and color choices (light khaki and chambray). The soft hand of the fabric comes from the silk/cotton blend -- don't be afraid of the "silk." They are still machine washable and not dressy like your grandmother's silk dress. The detailed top stitching is a great touch; very classy. The length is a smidgin shorter than what we have seen in past years. Just like women's dress lengths that vary, men's short lengths vary too. Above the knee is much more stylish for a more refined look, which is where these shorts take you. The colors are simple and straight forward pairing well with anything in Black Squirrel, and most likely in your closet too!

Mother's Day

Whoever said you can’t treat yourself on Mother’s Day? Go ahead, I did!

I just returned from a long weekend in Atlantis with my boys (Quinn & Hayne), my good friend from Colorado, Andrea, and her two boys (Ben & Ryan). While Atlantis may not have been mine or Andrea’s top pick, the vacation criteria was somewhere warm with lots of convenient activities for our boys – and it hit on all the metrics.

Here are a few of our favorite things:

Sunsets on the beach
Caribbean beverages for all ages
Mayan temple slides

These things were all great, but truly my everlasting memories will be of all the smiles, laughter and idle chit chat with good friends and family. While great memories can be created anywhere, it certainly does not hurt having blue skies, warm air, green seas and laid back island attitude to put you in the right frame of mind.

I admit my early Mother’s Day treat was a bit extravagant, but I blame that on Andrea’s persuasive ways. If you can’t pop down to the islands for the weekend, let me offer you some of my favorite “island tested” Black Squirrel goods. My Island Company board skirt was a perfect complement to my bathing suit and worked well with running shoes when the boys and I walked across the bridge to the food “shacks.” My Island Company Niki shirt was super comfy and just the right length. Lastly, as I have said before my Native sunglasses were a huge hit.

Wide Open Spaces, Women & Wool

Wide open is how I can best describe my "girls" trip to Big Sky, Montana. The vastness of the Gallatin Range once again embraced me and provided me with a complete escape from the daily routine. With my ski buddies and our female instructor, Noelle, we explored Moonlight Basin from glades to chutes to her secret powder stashes. Noelle introduced us to new lingo and snow descriptors that only women would relate to. While the trees and chutes were fine with me and have their place, it was the wide open spaces of the Headwaters of Lone Peak that won my heart on the slopes. Here the snow was dreamy delicious and the view delectable.

I found spending time with all women was wide open too. The conversations, the laughter, and the tips traded opened all of us to new ideas on skiing, parenting, website finds, new vocabulary words and, of course, ski apparel. The one common denominator by trip’s end was – WOOL. Frequent readers of this blog know what a huge fan I am of wool products, but for a change I was not the one pushing this floccus find. Those that had their old poly fleece neck gaiters and poly pro base layers all ended up tossing them out and opting for wool. "Why?" you ask. I answer, "Why not?" It is warmer and more comfortable. It breaths and works better on or off the slopes.

As we put away the ski clothes in hopes of spring temperatures everywhere, don't put

away thoughts of wool. It is a fabulous and practical fabric for warm weather too. For women, I adore the Rambler’s Way spring tops. They have such great style and as always feel so good. For men, the Ibex Indie polo is a spring “must have.”

While transitioning to spring don't forget to take a moment to savor the wide open spaces of the great outdoors.

Opportunities

When opportunities present themselves you often have to act quickly. Such is the case with three opportunities that recently came my way.

The first two relate to design and lacrosse. My boys have been lucky enough to be part of the Larchmont Mamaroneck lacrosse organization for many years. In fact, this will be Quinn’s fifth and final year playing for them. Every few years the organization buys new uniforms and here is where I got lucky. They asked Black Squirrel to design this year’s uniform. The uniforms just arrived and the boys and coaches are excited about them. Seeing the smiles and hearing the enthusiasm has been very rewarding.

Fast forward to Pelham’s new lacrosse program and my knowing a few folks involved. This opportunity came about by default, but an opportunity nonetheless. Garth is a coach and organizer of the program and when the group met to divvy up responsibilities he got uniform design. Needless to say we can’t wait for the new uniforms to arrive. They are just as classy as the LMYL uniforms.

The third latest opportunity is thanks to my older sister, Alicia. She planned a girls ski trip and invited me. I leave on Thursday for Montana. Perfect timing, right before lax season really gets underway. I will let you know how it goes.

March brings much newness at Black Squirrel. New HOURS, new PRODUCTS and new FACES.

We are officially expanding our shop hours to better serve all of you and hopefully some new folks too. We are now open Tuesday – Saturday. Weekdays are 11:00 am – 5:00 pm, and Saturdays 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. The shop has never looked better so please add us to your errand list, or be sure to book mark us (bsqo.com).

Spring merchandise is arriving daily and will continue to do so through April. We have added lots more women’s product, outdoor games, and gifts – all under the outdoor chic

umbrella. A few of my favorites are

Rita Murray, a long time resident in the southern Westchester area, has joined BSQO and will be a regular face in the shop and behind the scenes. Valentine’s Day

Try these chic new pink shirts, as they are my favorite pick for Valentine’s Day! I will sell 100 blue shirts to every pink so. So you wonder why I picked pink shirts to share with you on Valentine’s Day.

Island Company’s striped linen shirt is really more of a washed out or faded red and white stripe. It has a great patina and looks washed up, which I love. Roll up the sleeves, relax and enjoy.

The women’s polo is such a great silhouette and flattering to all body types. Most importantly, I love the soft pink, just the perfect touch of femininity with rugged jeans or canvas shorts. This juxtaposition of fabrics is completely outdoor chic.

Groundhog Day

As I sit inside on yet another “snow day” I have never been happier to read (http://www.chiff.com/a/groundhog-day.htm) that, “at 7:25 AM ET on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 Punxsutawney Phil did NOT see his shadow - predicting an early spring!” I will admit that I am a bit superstitious and especially when the subject plays in my favor.Last Friday in my mind marked the end of winter as I placed my fall-winter orders and quickly transitioned to spring, at least in my mind, on paper, and with merchandise. Island Company is so strategic with their late January visits. On Sunday, Jenna and Linda, my Island Company contacts, show up at BSQO with their Palm Beach color, outdoor chic shirts, board shorts, and skirts, making my choices easy. I am excited for you all to see them. Be sure to watch for our upcoming Valentine’s Day email.

After their visit I headed to the New York Gift Show. To complement my picks from Island Company I found some fun beach toys and accessories from a new company called Nauti & Co. So even though it is not springy outside here in NY, or in Colorado where my friend, Andrea, tells me it is negative 17, Black Squirrel is gearing up for what should be an early spring. I CAN’T wait.

Recharging!

I apologize to anyone who is inconvenienced by Black Squirrel Outfitters being closed on this Friday, January 21. I left town this past Friday to recharge the batteries before attending the annual Outdoor Retailer show. I find there is nothing better than a few days on the slopes to help get my

mind right and this trip has been no exception. We’ve had a particularly wild ride with a little bit of everything – lots of family time, a wonderful day in Deer Valley with old and new friends, and a variety of temperatures and conditions which included sunny warm temperatures, one wet rainy day, some fantastic snow and some that was “not so much.” Plus, the people, architecture, styles and attitudes always inspire me.

New Year’s Eve in the Catskills

We hosted our second annual New Year’s gathering up in the Catskills. 2009 was so much fun I thought for sure 2010 would be a let down, but I was wrong. Thanks to twenty inches of fresh snow, followed by Colorado blue skies we all had a grand time.

The fun started with a “luge” sledding track that my boys made in our back yard. Check out the picture; they did a pretty good job. Sledding was followed by s’mores and singing. What more could children ranging from 3 years to 14 years want….

The next morning the sub 14 year olds headed to Hunter Mountain to downhill ski and the 14 and older group went on an awesome snowshoe.

Snowshoeing is the best sport; it takes no talent, is aerobic, and allows you to quickly get into the woods.

Our wine and cheese spread at the top (which was carried by our 14 year old Sherpa, a.k.a Quinn) was just divine. The Go Vino glasses were a nice addition.

The festivities were topped off with a fun dinner at which every male at the table had on a Black Squirrel ensemble –- yes, I was touched. I like that Black Squirrel outfitted my friends and family from sledding to s’mores to snowshoeing to dinner.

Nuts of the Month

With the temperatures dropping, these “Nuts” are an easy pick – one is new and one is just a long time BSQO staple. The new arrival from 66 North is their kid’s Baldur Jacket. While I am never sure how my new products will be received – I was really excited about the reaction to the Baldur. It is an extra thick and cozy fleece – warm enough to be outerwear on most days. More importantly it has received rave reviews from my young product testers and has been a hit with the Moms at recent shows in NYC and Greensboro.

A close second and long time favorite is the Cloudveil Run Don't Walk pullover. This item was part of my first collection when BSQO opened in 2007 and has remained part of our inventory every year. This is a really nice performance piece made from Polartec Power Stretch fleece; It is warm and light with a great fit. It is extremely versatile and can be a mid-layer or worn by itself. I take mine running, skiing just or lounging around the house.

Holidays are coming!

Thanksgiving will be here in less than three weeks and Christmas four weekends after that. I think it is never too early to start getting organized and doing a few things now will certainly make the last minute crunch more enjoyable.

We will host family for Thanksgiving up in the Catskills. My plan is to create a very simple meal and a weekend of fun. To begin, I am searching for some new recipes that are a bit non-traditional; I am convincing my family that we don’t need SOOO much food (simpler is better), and I have mandated casual attire, meaning jeans. Setting the tone always helps me set expectations to then make a game plan. Once my game plan is intact from food to activities then I will need to execute and DELEGATE. I know the weekend will be fun, but too quick --- and then we are into December.

So a quick Christmas to do list has been started. #1 on the list is the old Christmas card which is always a bit stressful. I’ve learned through the years to let go of my perfectionism, as I have realized few people will ever scrutinize our card as closely as I do. So when I found a good picture of our family from this summer, I made a quick decision that while it is not perfect, it would be close enough for this year, and for better or worse it is now at the printer. I always have to remind myself that the fun with cards is opening up the happy pictures from friends, and no one really cares if someone’s eye is shut or they don’t have their best smile. While there is plenty more on the to do list, at least I am making progress!

Remember, get prepared and keep it simple. If you need jeans, I love our new Patagonia ones.

The Case of the Missing Fall

Fall is definitely one of my favorite times of year. I love watching the kids on my block walking to school with their loaded backpacks. I love getting my kids back into their school routine. I love that the weather starts to cool down, but does not get too cold. I love the fall sports and especially sitting around watching a football game with the men in my life. I also really love a new season at Black Squirrel and unpacking the fall merchandise I ordered last winter.

For some reason this fall has been particularly discombobulated. I don’t know if it was because Labor Day was so late, or because school started so late, but for some reason, it is almost the end of October and I am not sure where all of the time went. As I sit down to crack the case of the missing fall, I realize it has been far too long since my last blog and I have lots to share.

Most importantly, I am so excited about BSQO's new ecommerce site. I hope it will finally be live by the end of the fall month. This site is

the primary suspect in my missing fall investigation. Had I known what an effort it would be to get all of the details correct, from photography to inventory - I am not sure I could have tackled it. The next time someone at a cocktail party tosses off the casual advice of "Oh, why don't you just try selling online" as if it were as simple as flipping a switch - I will have a good answer for them. Nevertheless, the site will look great and I, as much as anyone, knkow how much the web has changed my shopping habits, so this is project I am very excited about.

Another big project for me was “Martha’s Market,” a three day show I did in Charlottesville, Virginia. Even though I am not a big Virginia

Cavaliers fan, I really love the city and that area of the Shenandoah Valley. Martha’s Market is a fundraiser for the Martha Jefferson hospital and in particular women’s health issues. It was a lot of work getting all of my merchandise down there, but I had a little help (thank you Hank Cochran), and it was a very successful show – I saw old friends, met some new friends and overall I think Black Squirrel was very well received. I also was able to contribute nearly $2000 to the hospital, so I am very pleased.

Last, but not least I want to share my “Nut of the Month.” This month’s selection is the Rab Shadow Hoody.

Although the brand is still new to me, Garth and I “discovered” Rab last winter in Utah and are crazy about the line. Rab got its start 30 years ago making sleeping bags and now makes all types of outdoor gear and clothing. Few of their offerings are revolutionary, rather they simply make great looking, very functional gear that is at the heart of what Black Squirrel is trying to do. I was so excited when their shipment arrived last week that I have literally been living in my Shadow Hoody ever since. Its fit, color and comfort are all to my liking.

As I think back to my missing fall, I better understand where the time went. Looking ahead I know it does not get any easier between now and the holidays. So I am resolved to get my site launched, enjoy the last of my children’s football games, keep exercising and get myself ready for the madness that makes the holidays so much fun.

Sideline Fashion

Of course your kids are looking sharp on the field all suited up in their football and soccer uniforms, but how are you looking on the sidelines?

No matter what team it is or where you're cheering (NC, VA, NY or CT), everyone needs the same things when it comes to sideline fashion: comfortable, practical and stylish attire. My number one sideline pick for this time of year is down. Nothing matches down's warmth and light weight. After getting all the kid's gear in the car and on the field, the last thing anyone wants is something else heavy to lug around. Down is light and packable and keeps everyone warm when the October chill hits. All my down jackets and vests come in great colors, so you will look and feel good, on the field or off.

One other item that is worth mentioning is footwear. I am constantly asked by men in the store, "What's a good casual shoe to wear in the fall?" Even though BSQO has not started stocking mens shoes, here are a couple of my favorites for sideline style:

1 - Salomon Gor-Tex trail shoes. Look at something like the Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX - the dark color looks better than your typical running shoe and the Gortex keeps your feet dry and comfortable on the field or trail.

2 - Hush Puppy Reckless Boot - I love the look of these - like a retro sneaker with suede leather outers and a "Sherpa" lining to provide comfort and warmth.

Be Prepared

I had the good fortune of spending Labor Day weekend in Big Sky, Montana with "family friends." Big Sky, as I referenced in my April blog, is a magnificent area, and just as majestic in September as it is in April. We mountain biked, hiked, fly fished, listened to Willie Nelson play under the stars and gawked at moose, bear, elk and fox.

My biggest adventure was on Sunday, when I did my first fly fishing float trip. Thanks to my brother in law who arranged a trip with East Slope Outdoors -- http://www.eastslopeoutdoors.com -- we floated the beautiful and productive Madison River. Six of us launched in three boats led by our colorful and expert guides: Sklyer, Adam and Stuart. While the fishing could not have been better as we landed plenty of Rainbows, Browns, Whitefish and even a Cutthroat; the weather was another story.

We knew the forecast called for a chance of rain with a high in the mid 60’s and upon departure the weather looked favorable – a beautiful mix of sun and high billowy clouds and moderate temperatures. Then we were off and within the hour the temperature dropped and we faced hail, lightning and thunder . . and we had six hours to go. I was hanging in there until my guide, Stuart, told me to set my rod down while we waited out some lightning that was a bit too close for comfort.

Fortunately, my family members have been very loyal supporters of Black Squirrel and I must say we were all well prepared with our layering systems that included plenty of Black Squirrel gear – Ibex base layers, fleece and down insulating layers and good waterproof shells.

Had the fishing not been so good I am sure I would have packed it in sooner – given that I am not a big fan of the wet and cold – but I sure would have hated to miss all the fun. This trip was a great reminder of why I opened BSQO in the first place. I love being outdoors and I don’t want to have to change my plans every time the weather changes. I am also not the kind of person who is going to run out and buy a new fishing or skiing or hiking outfit every time I want to try a new activity – so I need Black Squirrel gear – attractive, quality and above all, functional.

Best of all, by the time we got to Eino’s Tavern in West Yellowstone, I was warm, ready for a cold beverage, and ready to swap fish tales with my family and our guides.

Mid Summer

I just sent out my email announcing Black Squirrel’s mid summer sale and I am feeling a bit nostalgic that I have only one more month before my boys head back to school. But when I stop and think of all of the great things that have happened, I get even more excited and determined to take advantage of these last few weeks with my family. Now that camps are over and summer lacrosse has wrapped up we will have the opportunity to spend some time in the Catskills.

I am working on a mental “to do” list of fun things I want to accomplish before September is here. A fun adventure is always on my list. Thanks to my kids, nieces and nephews this item rarely goes unfulfilled. Earlier this summer my 10 year old niece told me about always wanting to try parasailing, so next thing you know, Eliza, Quinn and Aunt Anne are 50 feet in the air attached to the back of a boat. While it decidedly is not an “adrenaline” sport (my nearly seventy year old mother joined us too), it was fun and beautiful and I am glad to say I have tried it. It is a great “one and done” activity.

Also on my list is to sit, relax and read a book. I have definitely mastered the art of sitting (albeit without the reading and relaxing parts) this summer, as I have spent many weekends under the blazing hot sun watching kids play lacrosse. I did have one big thought for the store though, after seeing so many teams in uniforms with all of the trimmings – bags, helmets, t-shirts, socks etc - I am convinced I should start a Black Squirrel Teams (BSQT) division. My goal would not only be to put the kids in some decent looking garb, but plenty of the parents could use a little Black Squirrel touch as well.

Last, but certainly not least, on my list are a few exciting new initiatives at Black Squirrel. I recently attended a few fashion and gift shows and saw some new lines for next spring that I am working on bringing to BSQO. Also, I am getting closer to finally making the BSQO on-line shopping experience a reality.

While I am old enough to know that not everything on my to do list ever gets done – I will and I encourage you to enjoy the last days of summer.

Slacklining

So Monday was a fun day at BSQO. One of the Gibbon Slackilines’ Pros, Micki, who refers to himself as a “Slacker,” stopped by the store for the afternoon. Micki is in the midst of a busy cross country tour, performing tricks and introducing the sport of slacklining to thousands of people. Although the sport is just start to catch on the East, it is growing like crazy out West. Micki’s recent tour stops include EMS stores in the North East, Paragon Sports in NYC and other retailers like Black Squirrel Outfitters.

Micki’s advice for beginner slackers was simple:
- keep your head and eyes looking up, not down at your feet
- put your arms over your head slightly bent
- concentrate/focus
- practice, practice, practice (sorry – there are no short cuts)

Micki has been a slacker for over eight years and he is extremely talented. He showed us jumps onto the slackline, on the slackline, from one to the other and most impressive were his yoga poses. In between tricks he spotted quite a few of us as we tried to walk the line. The photos say it all. Hopefully Micki or another slacker will come through Pelham again.

Nut of the Month

For my "nut of the month" I am constantly looking for products and ideas that are new and cool, and sometimes I overlook some of my "tried and true" favorite things that, in this case, are literally at the end of my nose. Garth and I have been wearing Native sunglasses for years and I was thrilled to add them to my lineup this year. They are not the sexiest glasses on the market, but we keep coming back to them because they are a hit on so many fronts. I think they look great to start. All of their lenses are polarized which is a key point for Garth, an aspirational fisherman. Most of their models come with interchangeable lenses for any light conditions. They have a fantastic warranty and importantly, the price is right starting at just $89. So whether I am on my bike in low light conditions, on a boat or just knocking around town - these are my go to utility lenses. They are meant to be used and abused. Memorial Day Weekend

I cannot believe it is already the end of May and Memorial Day is here. Being from North Carolina Memorial Day means the beginning of summer. I have learned that for some New Yorkers the summer season does not start until July 4th, but that seems like you are just shortchanging yourself by a month. So when the days start getting long, the pool opens, kids are talking about finals, graduation parties are happening, the weekends are full with fun escapes and we start getting the boys’ clothes ready for camp . . . . then I know it is summer.

While summer is one of my absolute favorite times of the year, it is also one of the most hectic – there is simply never enough time to ft in all of the activities we want to do. One of my tricks for summer weekends is to do as much in advance planning as is possible. For instance, I know that summer means weekends away and the need to have great hostess gifts. I think the key to a great gift is getting something that is unique and always trying to find items that the whole family can enjoy. Whenever I nail this criteria I immediately stock up. (Now that Black Squirrel Outfitters is carrying more of these types of items life is a bit easier for me.)

This Memorial Day we are making what is becoming an annual tradition of visiting good friends down in Virginia Beach. I hope I survive the heat and that the Southerners like our Black Squirrel treats.

Nut of the Month

What could possibly be cool, new or different about a reusable metal sports water bottle? We all have them or have seen them everywhere. Unlike most plastic water bottles, they don’t end up in landfills and users don’t have to worry about chemicals from the plastic. But still – aren’t water bottles a bit boring?

Well, the Hydro Flask is not your typical water bottle, and with our recent hot weather, it is this month’s must have “Nut”. Firsts

Just like we do with our children, I have been making notes of Black Squirrel’s milestones or “firsts.” Some are interesting enough to share with you.

First Customers: Mark Tuttle and Tim Cassidy both of Pelham were my first true appointment customers on September 12, 2007. They (and their wives) have continued to support Black Squirrel – and for that, I am very grateful.

First Award: When Black Squirrel Outfitters was named Best of Westchester in 2008, it came as a huge surprise. When Black Squirrel was recognized again in 2009 we were true participants and attended the 2009 Best of Westchester® Party. It was lots of fun, and we found ourselves in good company.

First Fashion Show: This past week Black Squirrel was fortunate enough to outfit nine models (three moms and three senior boys) at the Fordham Prep Fashion Show. Five hundred women watched the show, and again we found ourselves in good company with the likes of Brooks Brothers and Family Britches. The senior boys stole the show wearing their Black Squirrel outfits with attitude and style.

First Move: Black Squirrel moves this week into a larger retail space at 525 Fifth Avenue in Pelham. The atmosphere will be the same, but we will have more space to welcome you. To that end, join us for our opening weekend May 6, 7 & 8.

People often ask me what I most enjoy about Black Squirrel and it is a slam dunk answer – I always say the best thing about my job is the people. Socializing and strategizing with people about my business is something I profoundly enjoy and find very inspiring. Today I had the privilege of speaking with a few people of note: a new potential vendor/partner (whom I feel is quickly becoming a friend), an old friend who is a customer and a customer who is now a new friend. Each of these conversations included valuable feedback and was an inspiration to me. I'll jot down a few specifics below:

I was recently introduced to Maryanne Quinn who is an artist living in Boulder, CO. She and her sister, Jennifer Ashley, make these incredibly cool belts – dyed horsehair patterns combined with beautiful leather and hand stitched in Colorado. In the course of the conversation Mary Anne also told me about her art wall hangings. After seeing the one shown here I immediately started dreaming about a design for a Black Squirrel shop wall.

My old friend, Dodson Schenck, who can be seen enjoying some fresh powder in Jackson just last week (in the next photo) called to say his Arc’teryx jacket was just perfect. He headed west expecting spring ski conditions but instead was pleasantly surprised when he found himself facing 42” of fresh powder in two days. He said he was very glad he packed his Patagonia down sweater as he needed the extra layer; I think he was trying to say thanks for convincing him to buy it.

My new friend, Ted Howard, stopped by the shop today to pick up a few spring items. It was through Ted, a year ago, that I was introduced to Greenlines, makers of classic boardshorts. Greenlines make their boardshorts from 100% recycled polyester fabric, and they too have a great give back component supporting local beaches and water ways.

All in all, these folks made my day. I love hearing from friends, new and old, so please speak up!

Comfort Zones

Years ago, while working in the marketing department at Vail Resorts, one of the “facts” I learned was that most families like to ski the same resort, year after year. It makes sense, right? We all like to be in our "comfort zone" on vacation and get into our routine. It is always nice to know your way around a mountain, whether it is finding fresh snow, knowing where the shortest lines are or visiting the perfect lunch spot.

When I lived in Colorado, my comfort zone was on any mountain that was closest to our home. Since moving to New York, I quickly fell into a comfort zone of skiing in Utah – driven by the fact we had friends there and the OR Winter Show is there. How quickly we became familiar with and loyal to several areas in Utah. It’s an easy direct flight and gets 500" of snow - what could be better?

Fortunately, thanks to family and friends, I just had the wonderful opportunity to visit somewhere new, a place I had always heard great things about, but considered it to be too far away or too much hassle - Big Sky and Moonlight Basin, Montana. Yes, the flight was a bit longer, but I am so glad that I stepped out of my comfort zone and found yet another place to fall in love with. Big Sky is aptly named as the vistas are absolutely stunning, the skiing terrain had more than enough challenges for everyone, and it was a very friendly place. The architecture made me want a truly rustic, yet refined mountain home, and gave me ideas for the new Black Squirrel shop (opening soon). I cannot wait to go back to Montana, be it for more skiing next winter or hiking this summer. It was simply -- just awesome.

With spring finally here (sort of), I am challenging us all to step out of our comfort zones. Whether that means not ordering the same thing from your favorite restaurant’s menu, or trying on something new the next time you are shopping for clothes - we all need to break out of the ordinary. Along the way be sure to listen to the advice of friends. Next time you’re in Black Squirrel, don’t be afraid to test drive board shorts with no liners, or a ribbon d-ring belt. I know a change can do wonders for the psyche!

Stripes

No, not the Bill Murray Stripes, but stripes in design. I find the simple design element - stripes - a natural, be it for interior, creative or fashion design. Take the American flag for example. Flags look great when used as a decorating tool in boys' bedrooms, or draped on tables. Look at all the wonderful bed linens that incorporate the basic stripe. They are fun, bold and make a statement.

For men and boys, what is classier than a great looking striped polo? I am thrilled to be able to offer my customers the Papo d'Anjo striped polo for men ($90) and boys ($50). They are made with a soft cotton jersey which feels great and wears wonderfully well.

Spring Arrives

It is official; spring arrives tomorrow, Saturday, March 20. For me the signs of spring are March Madness, lacrosse, daffodils, and the simple action of being outside. The signs of spring at Black Squirrel are color and patterns, from bright coral linen shirts to plaid cotton shorts. Overnight, the shop has been transformed by the arrival of my colorful spring merchandise.

March Madness – Our whole family looks forward the annual ritual of filling out the brackets (although it is a little more fun when your team makes the tourney). Personally, I like checking out the coaches and fans attire; what I would give to do a reality show about a coach makeover! I am also not so keen on the kids who dress up in costume and especially the painted chest thing (I hope Quinn and Hayne are listening!). I prefer the well dressed fan who is there to support his team and watch the game in style. So, if you will be in the stands, consider shopping at Black Squirrel first!

Lacrosse - All my boys are involved, so like everything else I either jump on the band wagon or get left behind. Last night I read every word of the latest Lacrosse magazine. I now have enough "cocktail conversation" to last me through the month. And, again, can I possibly persuade the lax coaches to wear good looking spring jackets? I know one who will.

Daffodils - As soon as they show up in the New York grocery stores, I know they are blooming in North Carolina. Ever since I was a child, daffodils have always marked the beginning of spring for me. I bought some this week and they are about the only girly accessory in our house right now. Look for them to brighten up a Black Squirrel photo or window soon.

Outside - Is there anything better than a early morning spring tennis game, a bike ride through city streets, or the sound of kids voices playing tag? It is going to be a beautiful weekend - so please shop early and then get outside!

Spring fever and other things

Winter break is over and yet it is still dumping snow outside; I have a bad case of spring fever. I need to get outdoors.

As I look forward to spring, I am so excited to introduce Black Squirrel’s new “cool gift collection.” I want Black Squirrel to be your preferred stop for outfitting your cool, classic and fun lifestyle.

One of my favorite finds at OR was the Gibbons Slackline – we even brought one home to test drive it. The kids immediately set it up in our basement and now compete on it everyday. Likewise, I attempt to walk across whenever I pass through the basement en route to my car.

The basic idea behind slacklining is to take some webbing, string it between two fixed objects and try to balance. Hayne says it is like a tight robe but wider. All I can tell you is it is challenging, fun and works your core. Quinn comes up stairs dripping wet after 20 minutes of practicing. Our Costa Rican surf instructor (see last week’s blog) says it is great practice for surfing – must be why I was so good on the board.

So when the weather gets me down, I daydream about spring and all the exciting things happening at the store. I love the new products arriving daily at Black Squirrel. Stop in when you can.

Surfing

Being the only female in my family, I am determined that I will not be the one who gets left at home when the boys are out playing. As a result, I have to put myself out there, because the boys like adventure and I want to be part of it. So at the ripe old age of 44 I committed to learn to surf.

Knowing I was out of my league I contacted a friend, Caroline Wallace of Brownell Travel. Thanks to Caroline the only hard part of our trip was the surfing. She steered us in the right direction and took care of every detail. Most importantly, she introduced us to Henry Aguilera who owns Dominical Surf Adventures. Henry, our surf guide, was awesome; he not only taught us to surf, but he shared so much with us about the Costa Rican culture.

Henry’s business philosophy and passion for his venture are ones that I hope to emulate. While sharing his country and talents with tourists he also employs many young men from his community who need his mentoring. He trains these men as guides while encouraging them to continue their education. His commitment and respect to the natural resources of Costa Rica have given him much joy and he wants his clients to enjoy them as well. Henry truly inspired me.

Since returning home, I have been working on concrete objectives for BSQO for 2010 to further increase my commitment to our community and will find ways for BSQO protect and encourage the use of our outdoor resources. I will keep you posted.

Our surf adventure will be a highlight for me for years to come. I can’t wait for warmer weather and more surf opportunities.

Tiramisu . . . and other things

My sisters and I all absolutely love a little "Tiramisu." I am not talking about the wonderful Italian dessert, rather to us, Tiramisu (or "tirami su" which literally translates as "pick me up") is a little something you buy yourself to pick up your spirits! During these cold February days as I, not so patiently, await spring, I think we could all use a pick me up. Whether or not you get yours at BSQO, be sure that you get a little Tiramisu this month!

Speaking of "pick me ups," I recently spent time with one of my favorite spring/summer brands, Island Company, who are out of Palm Beach (sadly, the meeting took place in NY) and I am really excited about the new orders I placed. I love the Island Company board shorts, they are authentic board short quality - for the inner surfer in you - but come in great colors and patterns that you will not find at your local surf shop.

I am most enthusiastic about the women’s pieces presented by Island Company. By request, I will showcase my spring/summer favorites for women, and among these are pieces from Island Company. Maybe this featured tunic is your "Tiramisu."

Snow, Snow and More Snow

As you know from an earlier blog, Garth and I spent two days at OR in Salt Lake City speaking with great outdoor brands and checking out what’s new for 2010. As expected, we are excited about the cool, new stuff from our favorite brands and we found some great new brands as well. As a matter of fact, you will see some new items in time for Father’s Day.

Saturday we hit the slopes and have had three days of unbelievable skiing, thanks to the generous snow gods. Over eighty inches of snow in 6 days to be exact. Check out the picture of the car pulling out of the Solitude parking lot for a little perspective of the snow fall. I decided to throw in the landscape shot as well. Usually my scenic shots aren’t so great, but I really like this one taken from the “High T” at Alta.

As we skied, naturally we checked out what folks were wearing. There has been no shortage of Arc’teryx, Cloudveil and Patagonia. It is great to know that Black Squirrel’s picks are also on some of the best slopes in the US.

The single most popular piece of gear at OR (and also spotted at the resorts) was the Patagonia Down Sweater. Just for grins, we started counting the “Down Sweater spottings,” but quickly lost track. When meeting with our Patagonia rep, we learned that the Down Sweater was one of their top sellers and they have been sold out since October. Fortunately for you, I have a few left in inventory. My "Nut" of the Month

It’s Nut of the Month time again. For January, without a doubt, I pick the new KIDS pieces from Ibex. Just before Christmas we were able to test drive these. They are so practical, comfy and cute. Hayne, my 11 year old son, wore his Ibex Hoodie or Ibex Shak every day of our vacation. The Hoodie was his go to “casual shirt” and the Shak was his “sweater” – which he wore over a collared shirt for “dress up.” Even back from vacation, he has continued to wear these pieces – I catch him in his Hoodie at home watching TV and both pieces have made it to the hockey rink.

Ibex Kids is well worth the investment. The Hoodie retails for $72 and the Shak for $95. I can feel you raising your eyebrows, and questioning, “Why would I pay so much, an Under Armour long sleeve only costs $39.95.?” I still say my Ibex is a better value – it looks better, it fits better, it lasts longer (in my experience), it is made from a sustainable fabric, and you can wear it every day for a week (trust me on this one).

I originally planned to pick the best of the best “blog/email feedback,” but having received over 35 responses, which truthfully were all very good and extremely helpful, made that strategy tough. So I ended up putting all responders in a hat and drew a winner.

BSQO Hunts for More Nuts – REPLY TO WIN!

In 10 days, Garth and I head to the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City. This will be our 4th year attending what, in the industry, is known as “OR” and we are just as excited as ever. It is heaven for anyone who loves the latest in outdoor gear, fashion and gadgets. It is always a very busy trip for us (although we seem to manage to sneak in a few days of skiing), but we come home inspired by and enthusiastic about the cool products we see, the great people we meet and the new trends we spot.

A couple of years ago, I remember noticing that almost every in-the-know guy or gal was sporting their “shiny” insulated coats (made from down or primaloft) and I quickly discovered how essential these pieces are. Lightweight, warm and compressible enough to stuff anywhere, I now never leave home without one. Some of you have trusted us and purchased some personal sheen; my bet is that others will soon follow.

My last blog posting kicked off the Holiday season and it is now 2010; so, yes I am very delinquent in sharing news with you. December is filled with parties, shopping and cheer, and all that fun can be very demanding. I prioritized my shop, family and friends – so my blog got lost in the frenzy. Nevertheless, after a very relaxing and exciting Christmas and New Year vacation I am back to work, but also reminiscing about the season.

I have received numerous emails from new customers and thought sharing a few of their thoughts about their personal Black Squirrel experiences would be meaningful.

My "Nut" of the Month

Each month I pick my Black Squirrel "Nut" of the month, which is my little shout out to a particular product, observation, or a customer that has recently piqued my interest. I opened the “Nut” series talking about my love of belts. If you did not have a chance to read it simply scroll down to the October 29 posting.

This month my “Nut” is the Nau Shroud of Purrin Jacket. Nau is a new brand that BSQO began carrying this year. Nau was started several years ago by a group of designers who left Patagonia to form a company that is completely dedicated to making sustainable clothing that marries cutting edge fabrics with great style. I love the Nau approach – sustainability with style! As we head into a season filled with consumer frenzy, I encourage everyone to think about minimizing their waste. Every piece of clothing designed and produced by Nau is made from 100% recycled and recyclable fabric so at the end of its long life it can be sent back to Nau to be recycled once again.

Equally important, Nau makes superior products. The Shroud of Purrin coat is super good looking, yet the simple lined soft shell jacket epitomizes the Nau brand. The inner lining is so soft you may just stop wearing baselayers. Its wind and water resistant outer shell allows it to work equally well as a midlayer on the coldest of days.

Wander the streets of NYC or hit the slopes of Aspen and you will find yourself fitting right in.

What to wear for the Thanksgiving HOLIDAY

Hard to believe that Thanksgiving is just over a week away. Throughout the years Thanksgiving for me has been about family time, food and some fun activity. Years ago when I lived at home in North Carolina my family’s Turkey Tennis Turnament was always a highlight, filled with competition and lots of laughs. As a young married couple living in Colorado, Thanksgiving Day always meant a day on the slopes – conditions could be iffy, but the crowds were sparse. In New York City, it was all about bundling up and finding a good spot for our boys and me to watch the Thanksgiving Day parade. Nowadays our focus is on ice time, Turkey Bowls or traveling to see family. I think one of the reasons Thanksgiving is such a special time of year is that no matter my age or geography, one of the few constants in my life is that on the fourth Thursday of every November, I will take time to celebrate my family with food and a fun activity. No matter where you find yourself, I hope you too will be surrounded by friends, family, good food, and an activity or two.

This year we head south to Lynchburg, VA to see Garth’s parents, so Susan Weeks and Katie Franks will be holding down the fort at Black Squirrel for me. Luckily, I will be off the hook for preparing dinner so I really just need to worry about outfitting my boys (including my husband) for the day.

Dressing for Thanksgiving Day can be tough. You need to be ready for all kinds of weather and all kinds of activities, but you want to look put together when you sit down for the Turkey. My guys will all start in their Mountain Khaki pants. They are comfortable and work equally well having a catch in the backyard as they do at the table. Up top, I think it is always best to think about layers which can dress your look up or down and provide extra warmth and comfort.

Plaids are always a good fall choice. My favorite top mid layers are the Ibex wool pieces, be it a vest, full zip, or pullover (which I just happen to carry). A lot of guys go for a sweater, which is a great look, but I just think these Ibex pieces are a little sportier without being too casual. After all, Thanksgiving is a day to be relaxed.

Stay comfortable, stylish and simple. Eat, play and be thankful!

"It's Showtime"

With the holidays upon us, it's "showtime" for Black Squirrel. We are going to be on the road holding several in-home shows where Black Squirrel enthusiasts (old and new!) will be able to touch and feel our wares and discuss gift ideas with us. I really enjoy traveling to other parts of the country and connecting with customers who cannot make it into our shop in Pelham.

These types of intimate, in-home gatherings give me the chance to see many wonderful people, some whom I have spoken to on the phone, some I know and others who are all together new to me. Learning about everyone's lives, their needs, and what they have enjoyed from BSQO in the past brings me great inspiration.

On Tuesday, November 10, I head to Debbie Andrews home in Lloyd Harbor, NY on Long Island. Then, on November 24, Black Squirrel will be in Greensboro, NC at my sister's house – Robin Ragsdale Schenck. Our last show will be at my good friend, Andrea Cuvelier's home in NYC on December 2. {If you are in any of these areas and interested in attending – please call me at 917-882-3566.}

Lots of fun companies and designers are selling their products at gift shows this time of year. Specialty shows provide an intimate shopping experience where customers and shop owners are able to have direct face to face engagement – certainly not what you get at the Mall or while shopping online! These types of shows also provide the opportunity to find fun, unique non “mass merchandise” types of gifts for friends and family. No one can deny that personalized unusual presents are always more special to give (and receive!)

Consider something different this year. Venture out and explore.

Introducing the October "Nut of the Month"

Each month I plan to write a kernel or "Nut" about observations I make while running Black Squirrel Outfitters and connecting with my customers. To crack open the “Nut” series, I focus on my love of belts. Belts for men and boys are like necklaces for women; they can make or break an outfit. Think of a man wearing jeans and an un-tucked T-shirt. If he tucks in his shirt and adds a good looking belt, he will suddenly look pulled together. Line up five men in khakis and polos and their belt will set them apart. A good belt can differentiate you from your colleagues and even hint at your personality.

This month I am "nuts" about Argentinian belts that just arrived in our store. We’re selling them in a range of sizes suitable for small boys to big men. Among other things, Argentina is known for tango, polo and the Patagonia Mountains. Add these colorful geometric belts to the list.

How Black Squirrel Got Looped In:

- A good friend of mine was shopping in Argentina and thinking about Black Squirrel when he spotted these belts. He felt they would be a good addition to the mix and he cinched it. They are fun and work well with jeans and khakis. And best of all, when we’re all tightening our own proverbial belts, the price is right: $60/men and $20/boys.

A quick tip for young boys; if you would rather wear a T-shirt, as long as you have on a belt you will still look neat and may be able to get past the front door without someone telling you to go back in and put on a collared shirt.

Picture Perfect Columbus Day!

We took advantage of this past long weekend to head up to the Catskills for a little family time. My boys, Hayne and Quinn, stood still for minute so I could capture a quick shot. Fortunately, the foliage was at its peak and it was a colorful weekend.

The fall season is one of my favorites – and Columbus Day Weekend is the perfect time to get away for a day or two and re-charge. Since Labor Day, we have been going non-stop with work, school and sports -- no complaining, but a slower change of pace was nice.

The chill in the air means time for hiking, picking apples, sitting by the fire and visiting haunted houses. For weekend getaways I like to pack lots of layers for my boys and me. When the temperature dips I always start with my "woolies" (the Zepher by Ibex is my favorite) and then I add more layers from there.

Many people have an outdated understanding of wool and think wool = itch. Wool has come a long way since the seventies! The wool pieces I sell are soft, comfortable and warm without being bulky. You can start your morning wearing wool and it will still feel fresh by the time you’re sipping a hot toddy at the end of the day. Wool can keep you toasty if you’re picking apples, taking a run or just simply collecting firewood. It might be time to consider reintroducing yourself to wool.

Since living in Pelham I have gone to the show and shopped for many gifts for my family. I am now grateful to my friend Kristin Barsanti, who helped me secure a table for Black Squirrel Outfitters at this year's show.

Even though it is a holiday show, Black Squirrel’s shopping theme this year will be all about looking good on the sidelines (at football games, soccer games or otherwise.)

Women's Must Haves - encouraged by y'all, this Fall I introduce some essentials for women. Like everything else at BSQO, I am focusing on items that fit your hectic lifetsyle, but still look great. One of the new brands I am really excited about is Nau (pronounced "now"), a company that excels at using cutting edge performance fabrics to create great looking clothes.

My Back To School Picks -

Mountain Khakis' Original Mountain pants - $55 - I love these on my boys, and my boys love wearing them, so getting dressed for school is suddenly easy for everyone. The Original Mountain Pant is soft against the skin, but is plenty tough where it is needed, making it a no brainer for back to school.

Patagonia's Pique Fleece - $80 - When he wants his hoodie and I want him in a sweater, this is our compromise. I think subtle details on this 1/2 zip fleece - from its textured pique fabric, to its side zip cell phone pocket make this a perfect back to school necessity. It stuffs easily into back packs and lockers, not to mention your son will want to take it to the slopes too.
